I'm a Regular
My Gal
My Voodoo Doctor
He's a voodoo doctor, very similar to the one I saw a few years ago who looked just like Donny Osmond and whom I let hold my hand whenever he wanted. My new voodoo doctor, whom I will call Vic, looks like Dan Cortese (please don't ask me why this is important). He also holds my hands but he also holds my feet. And that's surprisingly okay.
Actually, what they (he and his father work together doing their voodoo) were doing was some sort of biomeridian analysis using magnets and magic to tell me why I have become allergic to running. It has been fascinating and I'm sold on it. After running electrical currents through me, and testing my meridian points, he determined which of my bodily systems were wacky (in my case it was my resperitory system and my liver), and he gave me a bunch of supplements and some drops of magic water and told me to go off all my prescriptions except the synthroid. I did it and I feel GREAT. I don't have problems with my blood sugar any more, my BP is normal, rather than icky low like it has been for a long time, and my head is clearer than it has been in ages and I'm not taking 7 different allergy medications. So yeah, I'm a believer. The biggest part that I like is that their philosophy of treating the cause of the symptoms, not the symptoms themselves. It just makes sense to me. If I had a blister on my hand from holding it against an iron, I wouldn't treat the blister, I would remove my hand from the iron. It is just so different from traditional medicine. How weird was it to have a strength test done and by simply touching a meridian point on my body, my strength cand went. It is just freaky voodoo magic.

Frank's Flying off to Maryland RIGHT NOW
He said it felt like he was only there a few days but that he learned month's worth of knowledge. He got to talk to M, since she hadn't left for school yet (everyone else was already gone). He also called Dilbert. He was going to try to call his sister's cell phones to leave them messages. I hope he had time to do that. They would love it.
I can't wait to see what happens next for him!

The Sound of Music Program at BYU
Have you done it, cont...
17. Walked the stairs to the top of the Statue of Liberty: when I visited the Staute of Liberty, we were in a hurry to get back to the Mother of the Year convention and I didn't have time to do the hike. Now that it is closed (stupid terrorists), I am extremely sad I didn't take that opportunity.
18. Grown and eaten your own vegetables: Being a farmer's daughter, I have done this all my life. I've got some in my garden right now. What would you like? Tomatoes, zucchini or egg plant? Peppers? Herbs? I've even got some peaches. Actually, I've got tons of them all so come on over!
19. Looked up at the night sky through a telescope: My parents had a telescope so yeah, I've done this. Actually I spent more time looking across the valley at my BFF Karen Ann's house while we talked to each other on the phone. I often wonder what has become of her. I've lost touch with too many friends.
20. Had an uncontrollable giggling fit at the worst possible moment: Always.
21. Had a pillow fight: I have 5 daughters so yeah, of course I've done this.
22. Bet on a winning horse: I actually have bet on winning dogs more than horses. In high school I took a debate trip to ASU. On the way we stopped for a few hours in Vegas. My debate coach was a big dog race better and he took us there. He placed the bets for us (I think it was $1) and we won enough to buy hamburgers. He gave us his racing tip, "If the dog poops before the race, bet on him. He's not all backed up so he can run faster." Well, in my ONE time, that advice proved to be valuable. We stopped in Vegas on the way back, too, and again, without enough money to eat, we tried the nickle slots and won enough to go to McDonalds. Not a good gambling story, I'm afraid.
23. Taken a sick day when you're not ill: I am ashamed to admit I've done this. I was young and in love...
24. Built a snow fort: again, I live in UTAH. Who hasn't done this? The best snow-thing I've built was a huge luge run from the front door of our current home, down the yard and off the retaining wall. It was awesome. We built that in 2002 (I think!). We had a huge snowstorm that started on New Years Day and lasted for a few days and we had a ton of snow.
25. Held a lamb: Petted at the State Fair, but not held it
26. Gone skinny dipping: No way and no desire!
27. Taken an ice cold bath: 6 kids and a small water heater? It is a daily gamble.
28. Had a meaningful conversation with a beggar: As meaningful as could be, I suppose. I used to work in SLC at a telemarketing place and there would be panhandlers on every street corner. We would go out and give them pocket change during our breaks. What interesting people they were. Sometimes they were just down on their luck, but sometimes they were out of their minds.
29. Seen a total eclipse: February 26th, 1979 in Pasco, WA. We made pinhole viewers in my Gifted and Talented class. The whole school went out on the playground to watch it. I remember it getting dark and spooky and a hush falling over the kids as the eclips reached totality. We watched it's progress through the pinhole on the pavement. Then the principal signaled it was okay to look at the sun... All I can say is FREAKY. Then we noticed the beads of light around the edge of the shadow, signalling the end of totality. I remember being freaked out because we had been drilled that it was EXTREMELY dangerous to look at the sun at this time because we would be BLINDED. We started screaming to the Principal that she needed to have everyone look away and she and the teachers started yelling at us to look down. We all thought we were going to be blind. The length of the eclipse had been mis-calculated. But we all survived and have a story to tell now. The next one is in 2017.
My date with Dilbert
This is google earth's satelite picture of where we were...
Dilbert took his fancy metal detector and we went out in search of relics. First we stopped in a steep canyon. Dilbert's thinking was if they were coming through that canyon, the steepest parts would be places where wagons would have rolled, and that would be a good place to look for evidence of their passage. We didn't find much of anything except barbed wire and bullet casings so we continued down the trail. We came to a little canyon with a large, flat open area. We figured a wagon train would stop there for the night so Dilbert went out in search... It didn't take him too long before he found a large "oxen" shoe (we are assuming it is oxen because it is way too big to be a horseshoe). We searched the rest of the area but only found a few horseshoe nails, some sort of tie-down (in the picture with the shoe), a 1998 nickel, some tent stakes and a piece of costume jewelery.
But we did find a tailing pile from an old mine. With some careful inspection, we were able to find the mine shaft, mostly caved in, but still accessible. There was a strong, cold draft coming from the opening. Dilbert threw a rock down the shaft to see how deep it was, but it was too hard to tell how far down it went. I couldn't be persuaded to explore it any further i.e. go in it (I have children at home, for pete's sake!).
What do you think... was I being a scaredy cat?
It took us about 2 hours to cover the field and by then it was time to head home for M's party but it was a nice day. The biggest thing I learned, though, is I am EXTREMELY glad I wasn't a pioneer. It was hot and dry and barren and rocky and extremely buggy and I wouldn't want to have to walk through it, let alone camp there. I was extremely grateful to get into my comfy air-conditioned Pilot and drive home!
Have you done it?
1. Touched an iceberg: I haven't touched an iceberg yet. But I will because I am determined to take my DH on a cruise to Alaska and you can bet your buttons that I'm gonna HUG an iceberg. In the meantime, I have touched and even slid down a glacier. That's pretty cool, too, you know. My nether-regions was sitting on ice that has been there for thousands of years. I did it when I was about 13 years old and I hiked up Mt. Timpanogus with a group of youth from Bountiful. It was a long hike, but I'll never forget how amazing it was to cross the saddle and realize I was at the highest point of a mountain. It was breathtaking and frightening. To get down, we slid down the glacier, bypassing a 2 hour hike back down. I remember how painful the hike down was on my knees. I've not repeated the hike since because of my unforgiving joints.
2. Slept under the stars: When I was a kid, we used to sleep out with our cousins regularly. That was back in the good-ol'-days when you could see stars. How sad it is to me that I have to take my kids on a far off vacation so they can actually see how many stars are in the sky! Anyway, sleeping out was always fun because of the fear factor. We would bed down in our coleman sleeping bags (with the flannel lining that always smelled disturbingly remotely like urine), Off repellent stinging in our eyes. Oh yeah, we learned the hard way that you had to put it close to your eyes or you awakened with huge puffy bug-bitten eyelids. We would lie on our backs, gazing at all the stars and get as philosophical as an 8 year-old could get. Sometimes we could hear cyoties howling in the distance. That was always exciting. Most often, though, the most excitement we got was when the sprinklers went off on us. Something I should point out is that we didn't have automatic sprinklers.
3. Been a part of a hockey fight: why would I want this? Unless it was a hockey fight with the Barenaked Ladies. That would be fun!
4. Changed a baby's diaper: If I had a penny for every diaper I've changed! Blech! And the stories I could tell! **if you are squeamish with this topic, do not read any further** As a matter of fact, just the other day I was telling my kids how you could tell you were a REAL mom... That was if you could WEAR your kid's poop on you and not freak out (of course it is never by choice, it just happens and you deal with it). My favorite story, though, was Dilbert's. He had changed a newborn diaper and then went to eat his sandwich. He picked it up to eat it when he noticed some mustard had gotten on the heel of his hand. His first instinct was to lick it off, but just in time he realized it was NOT mustard.
5. Watched a meteor shower: so cool to sit outside and watch the shooting stars by the hundreds. But, like I said in #2, it is hard to do nowadays.
6. Given more than you can afford to charity: There's been a few times when I've sent stuff to the DI and then realized I sent the WRONG bag. I hate it when that happens.
7. Swam with wild dolphins
8. Climbed a mountain: See #1. Actually, I do this often, as I live in Utah an the mountains are RIGHT HERE. I love to hike, especially if there's a waterfall at the end of the day.
9. Held a tarantula: I haven't done it, but I've made my children do it (see previous posts)
10. Said "I love you" and meant it: Daily. Duh--I'm a wife and mother.
11. Bungee jumped: and never gonna do it, either.
12. Visited Paris: not yet, but maybe. My nephew just got called on his mission to Paris. Oh lala!
13. Watched a lightning storm at sea: Living in Fort Lauderdale for 4 1/2 years gave me ocean experiences I would never trade. I love sitting on the beach, watching the waves crash. My funnest vacation has been our trip to Newport OR where is stormed the entire time.
14. Stayed up all night long and watched the sun rise: I did the sunrise on the beach thing in Fort Lauderdale with elle_cossette (remember that?) But I've done the all night thing many times with Dilbert. Utah has amazing sunrises.
15. Seen the Northern Lights: On my list of things to do while in Alaska. I MUST see this.

M's birthday party
This is after the treasure hunt for bags with dollar store goodies in them (lip gloss, hairbrushes, gum, etc...). Perfect junk for an 8 year-old.
Check out the fabulous monkey cake... My friend Allison created M's dream cake. It was banana flavored with this cute monkey on the top. M squealed with delight.
Oops! Happy Late Birthday!

HELP ME!
Before Frank left, we had some family pictures taken. It was a blast and the pictures turned out cute. But I am completely unable to decide what to do next. I need to make some basic decisions so I am relying on YOU (yes, you... I'm talking to YOU) to help...
Here's a link to the pictures. I need to decide which of the close up pictures to use... I like the b/w one best but I want to put it over my stairs, above the vinyl poem I have there and the wall is tan-ish (the vinyl is black). I keep thinking the sepia would look best there but I like the b/w better. My next problem is framing and sizes. For some reason, I've been picturing the picture framed as an oval but that seems so 80's now. HELP ME! Next, the wall is 36" wide. How big should the picture be? The company who does the printing of the pictures also offers some framing for CHEAP. Here's a link. Which, if any of these, would you use?
Lastly, of the last 2 pictures, can you tell a difference? I can't. I want this one to go in the family room.
The room is dark blue right now, with a chocolate leather couch and a tan microfiber chair, red brick fireplace and light oak built in shelves. The whole west wall is bare and there is about 46" of wall between the patio door and the window on the east wall that is bare.

What would you frame it with? Mat or no? As I said, the walls in there are bare right now, so there's a TON of room to work with...
but I also just ordered this map

to frame and put in that room too. It is 35X35, unframed. I know... Craziness ensues. So what do I do? Decorate my room for me, please!!!

No e-mail! (and other stuff)
So now I'm wringing my hands again, just when I was doing so well!
I had my awesome A Family Fordever over for dinner yesterday. Her kids are so darling! She's a good mom (are you reading this, Fordever?) She brought those fabulous chocolate chip cookies I posted yesterday. Yumm! After dinner, she graciously accompanied me to our neighboring ward's enrichment night, despite the fact that her kids needed to go home to bed so they would be ready for school today. But she made the sacrifice (and I know what a sacrifice it is!). They had the Grocery Guru come tell us how to use coupons and save 70% on our grocery bills. It sounded so good when we were there, but today I've had a hard time getting his website to do what it was supposed to do. What is frustrating me is I have been there before and have had it work but it is being stupid today. (insert whinning here) I want it to work so I will have lots of cheap food in my house!!!

For the Love of Pete!
I know, it's stupid. But it's more fun than cleaning toilets.
Uh, but Dilbert, if you're reading this, I'm going to clean toilets right now anyway?

The best way to start a week...
I went to take out the garbage this morning for two important reasons. The first is because it was garbage day and the second is because the garbage man wont do it himself.
What a beautiful day, I thought, as I merrily skipped to the side of the house where we keep the garbage cans (the skipping part embarrasses my kids; that's why I do it). The sun was shining, the sky was blue--birds were singing. I took the first can down to the road and returned to take the second. As I pulled it roughly towards the driveway, I heard a strange, unfamiliar sound. There was an inexplicable hissing coming from the garbage can. I couldn’t figure out what it was because there shouldn’t have been anything aerosol in there.
Then I look down and see something like a large brown leaf by the wheel.
A BAT!!!
I had wheeled over it a bit and it was still hissing. I did the chicken dance halfway down the driveway before I pulled myself together and ran inside and called my neighbor to see if her husband was still home, and if it wasn't too much trouble, could he come save me?
He came over and after a bit of banging of garbage cans and scuffling, he finished it off and put it in the garbage for me (??) while I cowered in the house, safe behind my screen door, making high-pitched squealing noises of my own (okay, there was no banging and no scuffling but the squealing part was true). I called animal control who said that was sufficient and that they didn’t need to come check it out, even though I was sure it may have been a vampire bat and the hissing sound may have been it burning in the sunlight…
I’m so glad I didn’t have the kids take the garbages out today! That could have been really bad—scarred forever.

Big Kid Giveaway Day
First, notice the bright orange dot on his name tag. Yup. He's official because he has the dork dot. I just love this picture. It was taken just after I put his name tag on him for the first time. It tells me he is doing what his heart tells him he should do and there's no better payback as a parent than that.
I already sent him his first package. We dropped it off on the way to the MTC (without him knowing, of course). I packed a box full of green stuff (green PowerAid, green jello cups, green taffy, green apple rings, green gum, green beans... you get the picture). We all wrote him letters on green paper since he is the "Greenie" missionary. It was delivered to him tonight so I hope he knows we miss him (as if he didn't already know!). I also already sent him an e-mail that is supposed to be delivered to him as he goes to dinner. I'm just a sick mom, I know! Truth is, it is gut wrenching to walk away from your baby, wondering if you packed him enough underwear and if the other kids will play nice…
There are so many thoughts going through my head... so bear with me while I get them all out over the next day or two (in random order, perhaps). First, as Frank was set apart, the stake president had such wonderful words of wisdom for him. He asked him to consider his legacy. President Webb said the GA’s who trained him as a stake president asked him to consider what his legacy as a Stake Pres. would be and he challenged Rob to decide now what he wanted his legacy as a missionary to be. He said not to put it in terms of numbers of baptisms, but what he, as a man, will be remembered for. Is it his love of the people, his willingness to serve? To follow mission rules to the T? What absolutely amazing advice to give a missionary as he is being set apart. Pres. Webb is an amazing, inspired man.
What's great about tonight is for the first time since he got his call, there are no longer two years left in his mission... There is now less than two years.

Cousins at the Open House
Thumbelina

This is my baby sister. She's had quite a bit of health difficulties in the last 15 or so years, but she's doing amazing well, all thing considered. About a year ago (or maybe it has been longer?) she had a stroke and it has hampered her ability to talk. She does much of her communicating with her hands, especially her thumb. Thus the name Thumbelina.Since my folks are in Spain (which had quite a tomato fest this past week), I thought I would post this picture she had BNLFAN take of her so they could see how well she's doing. She posed it herself...

We had a large group in attendance which made the day so much more special. I didn't think to take pictures, but BNLFAN was snapping away for her photography class. I will post some more of her pictures later. She took a lot, but mostly of the little kids in the backyard.
Anyway, after Sacrament Meeting, everyone came to our home for taco salad.

We were planning on having people eat outdoors in the backyard (thus the rush to do the deck and plant flowers, etc...) but the weather was supposed to be windy and raining. I prayed so hard and the Lord heard my prayers. The weather was beautiful. We had bright sunshine, cool temperatures and good shade. Not more than 10 minutes after we had put down the shade tent and brought in the tables, it started to pour... I'm not talking about the usual Utah rain (which Floridians would call a mist), it was a downpour. Tender mercies.
Today is cold and rainy so we are playing games and maybe going bowling--depending on how busy the lanes are later this afternoon. One more hurdle on Wednesday and Frank will be on his way. It's been a long time coming and we are so excited for him to start this next chapter of his life.
Please write him! He'll only be in the MTC until September 22, but until then, his address is:
